Sıraselviler Caddesi — A Sweet Taste of Turkish Tradition

Sıraselviler Caddesi is where the vibrant energy of Taksim gradually gives way to the more relaxed, creative atmosphere of Cihangir. As you walk along the street, the crowds and commotion of central Taksim begin to soften, block by block, until the pace feels different. But along the way, there is a shop that makes this street particularly special to me: Tarihi Balsev, an extraordinary honey store that celebrates one of Türkiye’s most treasured natural products.

You can hardly miss it. Even the beekeeper suits displayed in the window hint at the fascinating world inside. This is not simply a shop selling jars of honey; it is a place dedicated to the remarkable variety, craftsmanship, and tradition behind Turkish beekeeping. Walking past it always reminds me how much culture and history can be found in the most unexpected places around Istanbul.

Türkiye has a long and important relationship with honey. Its varied landscapes, from forested mountains and wildflower-covered highlands to Mediterranean pine forests, provide different environments for bees to forage. The country is one of the world's major honey producers, ranking second globally in several recent production reports. Honey has a place in Turkish food traditions that goes far beyond a spoonful at breakfast. It is enjoyed with bread, kaymak, and other traditional foods, used in desserts, and valued as a natural ingredient in kitchens across the country.

Think of baklava, one of Türkiye’s best-known sweets, with its delicate layers of pastry, nuts, and syrup. Honey is also part of the wider world of Turkish desserts and sweet-making traditions, where ingredients and techniques vary by recipe and region. Its rich flavor connects everyday meals with celebrations, hospitality, and generations of culinary knowledge.

What makes Turkish honey particularly fascinating is its diversity. Karakovan honey, traditionally produced in natural-style hives without the conventional pre-made wax foundation, reflects an older approach to beekeeping that emphasizes the bees’ own work. Depending on the region and production method, it can be found in distinctive forms, including honeycomb, where the honey remains sealed within the beeswax cells. Mountain honeys offer another expression of this diversity, shaped by the wildflowers and plants growing at higher elevations. Pine honey, flower honey, and other regional varieties each have their own character, color, aroma, and flavor.

Tarihi Balsev brings this extraordinary range together in one place. Its many varieties remind me of what we aim to achieve with The Streets of Istanbul: a collection where every design has its own identity. Just as no two honeys taste exactly alike, our sneakers draw on different carpet patterns, colors, textures, and stories. Each has its own personality, yet all belong to the same larger collection.

That is what makes Sıraselviler meaningful to me. It is a street of transition, connecting two different sides of Istanbul, and Tarihi Balsev is one of those discoveries that rewards anyone who takes the time to look around. Beyond the familiar cafés and busy sidewalks, there are specialty shops preserving traditions and sharing products that tell stories about the country itself.

For The Streets of Istanbul, Sıraselviler represents variety, tradition, and the beauty of discovering something distinctive in the middle of everyday city life. Like Turkish honey, our sneakers celebrate the idea that a shared origin does not mean everything has to be the same. Each piece can carry its own colors, character, and story.

On Sıraselviler Caddesi, a shop window filled with honey and beekeeper suits offers a small glimpse into a much bigger tradition. It reminds me that, just like Istanbul itself, the sweetest discoveries often come in many different forms.

The upper is cut from a handwoven silk velvet carpet. Silk velvet is one of the most prized textiles in Turkish weaving. Its dense silk pile catches the light with a natural luster, feels exceptionally soft to the touch, and deepens in character with age. Carpets like this were made to be treasured, and each one represents hours of skilled handwork.

Our artisans cut every panel by hand, placing each piece to showcase the rug's best design and protect the integrity of the vintage material. Because every carpet is different, and every shoe comes from a different section of it, no two pairs will ever be the same. Yours is truly one of a kind.

THE PROCESS

Frequently Asked *Questions*

How do I know what size to order?

We recommend measuring your foot and comparing your measurement with our SIZE GUIDE before placing your order. For the most accurate fit, measure both feet and use the measurement of your larger foot when selecting your size.

If you are unsure between two sizes, our customer service team is happy to help you determine the best fit.

What is your return policy?

Each pair is handmade and numbered. Returns, exchanges and refunds are not accepted for ordering the wrong size.

Can I exchange my shoes for a different size?

Due to the exclusive and handcrafted nature of our collection, all international sales are final.

We cannot accept returns or exchanges due to a change of mind or sizing issues. Please review our size guide carefully before completing your purchase. Please pay special attention to each shoe model's sizing on the product page.

In the event of an error on our part—such as receiving an incorrect item, color, or size—please contact us as soon as possible. We will work with you to resolve the issue at no additional cost.

How will I know what pattern I will get?

You will not know until it arrives, and that is part of it. Each pair is cut from a handwoven Anatolian carpet, and the carpet decides the pattern, so we do not show or choose it ahead of time. Every pair is different, and none will ever be made again. Because each pair is one of one, all sales are final.

When the carpet ends, the run ends.

What is Anatolian velvet silk?

A luxurious textile inspired by the rich weaving traditions of Anatolia, combining the luminous character of silk with the plush depth of velvet. Each textile possesses its own distinctive variations in color, texture, and pattern—making every pair uniquely individual.
