Hayriye Caddesi — Where Istanbul Feels Like Home

Hayriye Caddesi, tucked into the Galatasaray neighborhood of Beyoğlu, is a particularly special street to me because it is where I live. It sits at that wonderful point where the energy of İstiklal Caddesi gradually gives way to the more relaxed, bohemian atmosphere of Cihangir. Here, the pace changes. Coffee shops, independent hangouts, creative types, and neighborhood regulars are part of everyday life. It is the kind of street where you can spend an afternoon lingering over coffee, run into familiar faces, and never feel like you are quite in a hurry to be anywhere else.

My home is in a 168-year-old historic building, which makes living here feel like being part of Istanbul's history rather than simply observing it. The street runs along the back of the historic and highly regarded Galatasaray High School, connected to an institution whose roots date back to 1481, when the original Galatasaray was founded during the Ottoman Empire. That means this little stretch of Beyoğlu sits alongside more than five centuries of history. There is something wonderful about living among buildings and streets that have witnessed so much of the city's evolution while continuing to welcome new generations of people.

And then there are the places that make this street and its surroundings uniquely enjoyable. The best pizza I have ever had can be found at The Tavern, while nearby Fransız Sokağı, or France Street, is a colorful stairway street that comes alive with music, restaurants, and libations seven nights a week. Popstel is another popular gathering place for locals, and scattered throughout the neighborhood are countless little coffee shops that give the area its unmistakable character.

But some of my favorite moments happen much closer to home. I am completely addicted to the canelés at Café de Giovanni, just downstairs. My dogs have become such good friends with the staff that they often sneak them fresh treats from the kitchen. It is these little everyday exchanges that make a neighborhood feel like yours.

That is perhaps what I love most about Hayriye Caddesi. Here, people know one another. Everyone says hello, familiar faces become part of your daily routine, and before long, you find yourself woven into a small community. In a city as enormous and constantly moving as Istanbul, finding a place where people look out for one another and the simplest interactions become meaningful is something special.

Hayriye Caddesi represents the spirit of The Streets of Istanbul in a very personal way. It is a place where history and contemporary life exist side by side, where tradition meets creativity, and where a strong sense of community remains at the heart of everyday living. Much like the handmade Turkish rugs and kilims that inspire our sneakers, this street carries layers of history, character, and individuality. We take those traditions and reimagine them for modern life — creating something that honors where it comes from while moving confidently into the future.

The upper is cut from a handwoven silk velvet carpet. Silk velvet is one of the most prized textiles in Turkish weaving. Its dense silk pile catches the light with a natural luster, feels exceptionally soft to the touch, and deepens in character with age. Carpets like this were made to be treasured, and each one represents hours of skilled handwork.
